Anderson Township Historical Society
The first legal owner of the property where the Miller-Leuser Log House stands, on its original site, was Captain Matthew Jouitt, a Virginia officer who was granted 600 acres of land for his services in the Revolutionary War. This deed is dated June 9, 1793. Captain Jouitt died soon after and his son engaged Nathaniel Massie to dispose of it for him. Massie, in a deed dated April 2, 1796, sold 440 acres to Ichabod Benton Miller for $220.00 or $.50 cents per acre. The deed recording the transfer states that Miller may take possession "at or before the ensealing and delivery of this deed." This quotation implies that the log dwelling may have already been built. There being no way to prove an earlier date, 1796 is the one used by the Anderson Township Historical Society in the dating of the house.
In 1836, Miller sold the log house with 15 acres of land to Tabitha Noble, who was living in it at the time. In 1867, John Bunyan Corbly, acquired the 15-acre farm and 17 more acres of the Miller Clough Farm but held his purchase for only a few months before selling it to Nathan S. Perry. The Perrys lived on the 32 acre farm for 12 years before selling it in November 1879, to Nicholas Wolf. One month later, Wolf sold it to Martin Jung, reserving for himself a 20-foot strip of land for access to his orchard on the hill. For 28 years, the Jungs (or Youngs as they later came to be known) lived in the log house, selling it in 1907 to Joseph Leuser. Joseph's son, Lawrence, and Emma his wife, came as bride and groom to the log house in 1910 and lived all but a few final months of their over 50-year marriage there. The Anderson Township Historical Society purchased the house and the land surrounding it from the heirs of Lawrence and Emma Leuser in March 1971.
The Log House is located at 6550 Clough Pike, Cincinnati, Ohio 45230. It is currently closed but expected to open in June if the shelter in place and social distancing orders are lifted.
