Anderson Township Veterans
The Anderson Township Historical Society honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Many Anderson Township citizens answered the call to serve our nation during times of war and times of peace. Some of our citizens paid the ultimate price and are memorialized in our cemeteries such as Mt. Washington, Hillside, Guardian Angels and the Pioneer Cemetery.
This section of our website is dedicated to these individual’s history and Anderson Township’s history from the Civil War through today.
Read the letters of Edwin Dunham to his sister during the Civil War, visit our honor roll and submit your veterans story and images for our digital archive, and browse our gallery of just a small sample of our archives.
Other community groups exist with an aligned desire to honor our veterans, such as the Friends of Hillcrest Cemetery. If you’d like to learn more about area veterans, then also check out their Facebook page at Friends of Hillcrest Cemetery – Home | Facebook.
Letters from a Mt. Washington Sailor in the American Civil War.
These letters were written by young Edwin Dunham, son of William Dunham, Mt. Washington grocer and postmaster for a number of years.
Edwin served for a little more than a year – February 1864 to March, 1865 on the USS Ram Avenger, a Ram that patrolled on the Mississipi.By this time the western waters were firmly under control of the Federal Government, so the Union vessel saw very little combat action.
